Verse
“How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you.”
— Psalm 139:17–18 (NIV)
Explanation
In this passage, King David reflects on the greatness of God’s nature and His deep, personal awareness of him. Throughout Psalm 139, David marvels at how God knows everything—his thoughts, his words, and his ways. He recognizes that there is nowhere he can go where God is not present, and he praises God for His constant nearness.
In verses 17–18, David shifts his focus to God’s thoughts toward him. He describes them as precious, vast, and beyond counting—like grains of sand. This reveals how deeply God cares for His people. It is a powerful reminder that we are never overlooked or forgotten by our Creator.
David is in awe that the same God who created and sustains the universe would think so intentionally about him. This truth brings comfort, especially in difficult times. Whether we face hardship, uncertainty, or struggle, God’s thoughts toward us remain constant and full of care.
David also expresses that when he awakens, he is still with God, showing an awareness of God’s continuous presence day and night. God’s presence in our lives is never interrupted. He surrounds us at all times with His love, and nothing can separate us from that love.
At the same time, David acknowledges God’s justice and humbly asks God to search his heart, recognizing the need for personal growth and alignment with God’s will. This passage reminds us that God’s thoughts toward us are countless, His presence is constant, and His love is unbreakable.
